I am inspired by Baybayin, an ancient Filipino script not actively used since 1800’s, as it reflects centuries of forgetfulness from colonization.What began as a personal journey through quiet anxiety has grown into giving voice to ancient ancestors. I have combined Baybayin script and creative expression in a way that I feel will resonate with people and encourage them to explore their own cultural knowledge.My mixed media embodies a unique view of cultural traditions, yet familiar imagery allows for a connection to the Filipino American experience: individualism and kapwa (Filipino psychology of togetherness). My work portrays the augmentation of colonization in the Philippine Islands, as well as expressing Filipinos’ whimsical perspective. From time to time, I feel compelled to share my own inner conflict at the urge of the ancient healing practices I am learning through my journey.I am embraced by the Filipino community where I exhibit my work at various cultural events. My workshops on Baybayin script have been featured in print, local and international TV. Two key pieces of my work are published in “Tayo Literary Magazine,” and have exhibited at Linen Life Gallery in San Leandro, Oakland State Building Atrium Cultrural Craft and Art Gallery, San Francisco’s NJAHS Peace Gallery and Asian Art Museum.“NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!” ~ Monty PythonMEL ORPILLAMel was born and raised in Vallejo. He is currently employed as the Community & Government Relations Manager for Kaiser Permanente Napa-Solano Area. He is a National Trustee for the Filipino American National Historical Society as well as the Vallejo Chapter President. Mel volunteers his time as the managing Director of the Vallejo Bayanihan Center and serves on several local non-profit boards. He earned degrees in Photo-Journalism and Ethnic Studies. He is also a writer, photographer, Master of Balintawak Arnis, Amang Red in the Tatak ng Apat na Alon tattoo tribe, and is the author of “Filipinos in Vallejo, published by Arcadia Publishing. His writings have been published in numerous newspapers, magazines and publications.INFORMATION ABOUT KAPPA PSI EPSILONKappa Psi Epsilon is a womyn’s organization dedicated to the empowerment of womyn through academic rigor, community action, cultural awareness and production, interrelations, and undying sisterhood. Kappa Psi  Epsilon is a unity of womyn that supports as well as understands the need to resist oppression and to always struggle for freedom, be it within or externally…Find Your Inner Strength!
